Here is an opportunity that only presents itself once in a lifetime, if indeed, it does at all.  Spatsizi Wilderness Lodge, Spatsizi Wilderness Vacations and Collingwood Bros. Guides & Outfitters; all well-known and renowned to sportsmen around the world.  Spatsizi Plateau Wilderness Park is drenched in history, situated in the upper reaches of the Stikine River only accessible by air or through a time consuming effort by jet-boat, horse or hike.  Remarkable mountain landscapes, roaming populations of game, robust rivers teaming with Rainbow Trout.  It is truly a piece of Beautiful British Columbia that extrudes the true meaning, and places a client in the wilderness as it was in days gone by.
Not even a handful of wilderness entrepreneurs have had the opportunity to bare the Spatsizi soul to the public.  After over 40 years of blood, sweat, and tears the Collingwood brothers are now in a position to pass the torch.  These two outfitters have done a wonderful job at ensuring clients will experience the same wilderness, the same chills down their spine that the early benefactor of this unique area, Tommy Walker, established some 75 years ago.

Collingwoods run diverse programs within the park to ensure clients have comfort, safety and success while visiting.  Working with 3 main base camps and 15 + satellite camps; fishermen, hunters or adventurers are supported and thrilled with the experience that can only be achieved in this location, Spatsizi.

This operation cannot be duplicated; it’s the best of its kind anywhere.  There is no comparison with other outfits.  This is without a doubt the premium operation, “This is a trophy asset”.  Do whatever it takes, whatever is called for, see whoever you need to take advantage of this offering, for you will never have this opportunity again.

Let me tell you a little of the operation.

Hunting
Collingwood Bros. Guides & Outfitters offers the ultimate fly-in hunting adventure in Northern British Columbia!  The fly-in operation caters to all types of hunters and their capabilities.  The Collingwood family have provided quality guide-outfitting services since 1969 and are the exclusive outfitter in the remote Spatsizi Wilderness Park and Skeena Region.  Hunting means is a combination of horsepack, riverboat, backpack or canoe.  They strive to tailor trips to suit the client’s physical ability.  Their commitment is to provide a successful and memorable wilderness experience.

Game offered; Stone Sheep, Mountain Goat, Canadian Moose, Mountain Caribou, Grizzly Bear, Black Bear, Wolf and Wolverine.  They offer exclusive single species or combination hunts from 8 to 14 days.

Hunters are accommodated in one of the 3 main camps and may be shuffled between the many camps and spike camps during their stay.  Spike camps range from cabins, wall-tents and are strategically located throughout the territory.

Season starts early August and runs into early October.  Hunter success is well above the provincial average in part due to high populations of trophy game and quality of guiding.  The Spatsizi region of British Columbia is well represented in all big game trophy volumes, including multiply accolades from Boone & Crockett, SCI and Pope & Young trophy records.

Conscientious game management and conservation over the years has protected the exceptional wildlife populations guaranteeing strong numbers in all species.

Fishing
Collingwoods are the only outfitters licensed to guide and fly anglers in the wild and pristine Spatsizi region and have exclusive access to the most beautiful, prolific, and unspoiled trout fishing in the world, including the legendary Firesteel River (Tatlatui Park).  With over thirty rivers, lakes and streams to choose from, a week of fly-out fishing merely scratches the surface of the resource at hand.

8-day fly fishing packages beginning with a 200-mile flight from Smithers to Spatsizi Lodge and from there clients are flown out or fish by boat from the lodge.  Trips are customized with fly-out destinations to suit your fishing preference, water conditions and hatch activity. The streams are loaded with the feisty, gorgeously-marked Rainbow Trout, easily enticed to take a dry fly.  There are free rising Arctic Grayling, trophy sized Bull Trout and Lake Trout.  The season runs from the end of June to late August and every week affords excellent angling.
Spatsizi lodge is located on Laslui Lake at the headwaters of the famous Stikine River in a spectacular wilderness setting.  It is within easy flying distance to the finest waters in Spatsizi and the surrounding region.

The lodge is rustic, yet very comfortable space, with a central dining area with a large pine table and sitting area.  Meals are served in the main building by a chef providing exquisite cuisine, freshly baked breads, and homemade desserts.   There is a fly tying bench overlooking the lake and an outside fire pit for evening gatherings and a horseshoe pit.  The lodge has gentle hiking trails, two motor boats, and a canoe.  Quiet electricity from a solar/inverter power system is available 24 hours a day.  There is an emergency satellite phone and very limited internet.

There are 4 spacious, but cozy, log cabins complete with a private shower, flush toilets, modern wood stove, comfortable beds, fresh linens and spectacular views of the mountains and lake.  There are also 2 private Yurts for single anglers.

Area Data:

Spatsizi Plateau Wilderness Park is one of Canada’s largest and most significant parks. True wilderness atmosphere, outstanding scenery and varied terrain make this park an excellent place for quality hiking, photography, and nature study. Lands within the park have an excellent capability for supporting large populations of wildlife.

The Park is located 200 air miles north of Smithers, British Columbia. This area, over 3600 square miles, is not accessible by road; the only access is via air or an extensive journey by river boat, pack horse or foot.

Spatsizi encompasses three major vegetation zones: alpine tundra, spruce-willow birch, boreal white and black spruce forest. The park spreads across two broad physiographic regions: Spatsizi Plateau and Eaglenest Range. The Plateau is a rolling upland that extends in a broad curve from Mt. Brock in the northwest, to Tuaton lake in the southeast. Elevation in the Plateau ranges from 1600m to 2000m. The mountains to the southwest are the Eaglenest Range.  The Eaglenest Mountains are rugged and alpine glaciation produced cirques, tarns, and hanging valleys. The highest peak is Mt. Will at 2500m. The river drainage includes the Spatsizi River and Upper Stikine. The scenery and terrain make the park an excellent place for quality backpacking, horseback riding, paddling, and fly-fishing.

The park’s geology includes volcanic and sedimentary rock that has formed striated mountains capped by rolling plateaus. Over thousands of years, these plateaus were cut by glaciers and rivers, forming the open grasslands and meandering rivers unique to the Spatsizi and Stikine valleys. It’s these valleys and plateaus that sustain woodland caribou, Stone’s sheep, mountain goat, moose and elk, and which subsequently allow predators such as wolf, wolverine, grizzly and black bear to flourish.
Spatsizi renowned for its stunning scenery, wilderness values and wildlife.  Adventurers are fortunate to experience such wild places. Spatsizi is simply one of those special places that those who visit never forget!

History: The park was established on December 3, 1975. Named for the region of the province that it occupies, Spatsizi means “red goat” in the Tahltan First Nation language. It was a name given to the mountain goats of the area because of their habit of rolling in the iron oxide-coloured dust, which changed their normally white coats to red.

Historically, Spatsizi was the hunting ground of the Tahltan First Nation. It was seldom visited by outsiders prior to 1926, when the Hyland brothers established a post on the Spatsizi River to trade with native fur trappers. In 1948, Tommy Walker set up permanent hunting and fishing camps at Hyland Post and Coldfish Lake, hiring local Caribou Hide Indians as guides. It was largely due to the efforts of Walker that the park and Gladys Lake Ecological Reserve were created in 1975.

For over 40 years, Collingwood Bros. Ltd. has operated an internationally renowned guide outfitting business within the park. As with all guide outfitters in BC, Collingwood Bros. has strict big-game quotas that limit them to a minor portion of the game available. BC’s Resident Hunter Priority Policy ensures that the majority of harvestable big-game species are available to resident hunters. Big game hunting employs local staff and taxidermists, contributes to BC wildlife conservation through trophy fees, and support regional tourism infrastructure.

Conservation: This park spreads across two broad physiographic regions, the Spatsizi Plateau and the Skeena Mountains. The plateau, a rolling upland, ranges in elevation from 1,600 to 2,000 metres, and extends in a broad curve broken by wide “u” shaped valleys. The Eaglenest Range of the Skeena Mountains dominates the northwest. Its highest peak, Mt. Will (2,500 metres) towers above Gladys Lake.

A portion of the central part of the park just south of Coldfish Lake has been designated as the Gladys Lake Ecological Reserve. The reserve was created for the study of stone sheep and mountain goats in an undisturbed habitat. Persons wishing to view these animals may hike the reserve.

Wildlife: Lands within the park have an excellent capability for supporting large populations of wildlife. The light snow depths in the rain shadow of the Eaglenest Range create one of the most important habitats for woodland caribou in British Columbia. The Spatsizi River Valley, with its many flooded areas and oxbow ponds, provides aquatic vegetation for summer forage as well as willow flats for winter browse for moose. Grizzly and black bears, wolverines, beaver, hoary marmot, and Arctic ground squirrels are fairly abundant and more than 140 species of birds including gyrfalcons, Smith’s longspurs and American Golden Plovers have been recorded within the park boundaries.
Spatsizi’s plateaus are particularly significant to the caribou and Stone’s sheep, which require high elevation areas with minimal snow pack both for safety from predators and for access to underlying lichens and grasses in winter. In contrast, the steep-sided valleys of the Eaglenest Mountains dominate the western portion of the park and provide ideal terrain for mountain goats.

Spatsizi Plateau Wilderness Park forms the backbone of an interconnected wilderness region that is geologically unique and supports one of the few healthy large -mammal ecosystems in BC.
