Area Data:

Tweedsmuir Provincial Park

Tweedsmuir Provincial Park is one of the largest (981,000 hectares) of BC's several hundred parks.  Located in the west-central region of the province, 480 km northwest of Vancouver, as the crow flies, Tweedsmuir is roughly traingular in shape.  It is bounded on the north and northwest by the Ootsa-Whitesail Lakes reservoir, on the west and southwest by the Coast Mountains, and on the east by the Interior Plateau.  The landscape varies drastically from domes of eroded lava and fragmented rock in breathtaking colours of red, orange, yellow and lavender to the rugged Coast Mountains and the deep valleys and ocean fjords of the Bella Coola area. The climate and topography vary drastically throughout Tweedsmuir Provincial Park giving it many vastly different vegetation zones and animal varieties.

The Alexander MacKenzie Heritage Trail passes through this park, via Heckman Pass and Burnt Bridge Creek.  Other trails in the park are numerous and access Hunlen Falls (259m), one of the highest waterfalls in Canada.

Aside from offering some of the most spectacular scenery in North America, Tweedsmuir is a magnet for outdoor recreationists.  Favourite activities include angling, hiking, horseback riding on wilderness trails, camping, and canoeing the Turner Lake Chain.
