Antlers, Salt & Claws

I've said this many times before, but here is one of the best, it gives us great pleasure to offer this territory for sale and you won't find another one like this.  This outfit is on the coast, just north of Vancouver, which allows for an easy in and out for clients; they can fly in to Vancouver in the morning and be on a bear or elk in the same afternoon.  This territory has a great cross section of game, all situated in some of the most spectacular scenery you can find in British Columbia.  It is one of the largest territories in S. BC at almost 10,000 sq. kms.; there's a lot to talk about, so let's get to it.

Let's start at the top: Roosevelt Elk. That's right, one of the top species in North America and certainly the cream of the crop when it comes to elk, these critters are very well known for their massive antlers.  Elk in this area are hunted from access points off of the ocean or deactivated roads where logging has taken place previously.  With this area having the largest Roosevelt quota in BC there are many different zones to hunt.  You can plan the hunt according to the client’s physical condition, from driving around in a truck all the way up to hard-core backpack hunts; there is a hunt to suit each client that gets them up close and personal with one of the most majestic animals in BC.  Hey, don't take it from me, take it from the fellows who keep score, the boys at SCI and Boone and Crockett, their records don’t lie.  Both of these organizations know this outfit and know the type of game that this area produces.  On top of having exceptional Roosevelts this territory also has the highest quota of Roosevelts in BC at 46 over 5 yrs. 

Well, the elk are cool, but let's not forget about your second cash crop which is black bear. Oh, I know you guys out there who want to be outfitters kind of look down at black bear.  Well, you don't have look too far down, because these bear are coastal black bear, the biggest black bear around.  And you know what goes with big animals?  Big hunt prices and respect. This area lends itself to a spectacular black bear hunt.  You get to hunt some of BC's well-kept secrets, along the coast.  To round it all off, why not stay in a float house on the ocean and feast on seafood?  Again, you can use deactivated logging roads to hunt these bear, you can use freshwater lakes, but the modus of choice is, of course, cruising by boat glassing the beaches.  Baiting is not allowed for black bear in BC, but the beaches are a smorgasbord for these bears.  What a great way to hunt, and a great way to pick the bear you want, rather than just taking any old bear.  Of course, you can also hunt bear over salmon in the fall, although the current outfitter focuses on the spring hunt, it’s just too easy and too much fun!

That’s the two main animals this outfitter has hunted for many years: bear in the spring and elk in the fall.  You want more though?!  We’ll give you more!  Let's start with mountain goat. This territory has no quota or limit on mountain goat.  There's lots of goats and goats are good revenue these days.  These are coastal goats, tough as nails, big as a 4-wheeler and in the record books.  Well, of course when I talk like that there must be a catch; the hunting in this area for goats is, ah, not for the weak of heart.  You want clients who can hike, climb, shoot, sleep under a goat hide in the rain and eat a power bar for dinner (you goat guides know what I mean).  With a little bit of work the new outfitter could put in a few trails which would help, but if you are willing to grind it out you will be rewarded.  

Want more, of course everybody wants more.  How about cats, do you have any interest in cats?  Cougar and bobcat are plentiful in this area.  OK here comes the catch, so we're on the coast of BC, generally milder weather than inland, which of course grows those big elk and bear with long foraging seasons, but by the same token, cat hunting generally requires a bit of snow which can be fickle here.  If you have clients that can come on short notice, it’s perfect and there are some big toms to be had.  Maybe talk nice to this outfitter and he will sell you a few dogs which know their way around the cat trees here.  On top of cats and your other species, you also have excellent black tailed deer to fill in your seasons.  

OK so you're an outfitter, you like hunting, you like getting out, and you like showing other outdoorsman how great your territory is.  So, you want to keep busy during the summer or the off-season?  This country is just spectacular: you've got jagged rocks and snow-capped mountains, rainforest, big trees and….wait for it…. five species of salmon and steelhead along with cutthroat trout.  How great is that for hunters to try a little fishing in their down time?!  You want to take a few fishing trips in the off-season, fill your boots, you can use the same boats and float house that you use for hunting.  Lots of you fellas want to be guides for all sorts of beast.  Well, let me tell you, you put a Chinook salmon on the rod of one of your clients, you’ll have more fun than the client watching him wrestle that salmon in.

I haven't told you everything, there’s so much to say about this territory.  The territory is set up and has many access points that only few know about, let alone travel.  You've got your own landing craft which packs a Suzuki Sidekick or quad into those remote, abandoned logging sites with miles of road to utilize.  It's like having your own private hunting grounds and those hunting grounds produce some awfully good game. 

This territory is virtually indescribable, between the settings of both ocean and mountains and the cross-section of trophy quality game.  Oh, and I forgot to mention this operation comes completely outfitted. There's so much equipment, vehicles, float house, boats, and small equipment that all you need to do is show up with your duffel bag.  For accommodation you have the choice of a comfortable 4 bedroom float house or a 38' ocean boat that sleeps 4; either way you are on the ocean taking it all in.  For some of those elk hunts in the southern portion of the area you also have the choice of a 26' travel trailer.  Good accommodation choices that can cover this large territory.
